10 Useful Starting Points for an Aspiring Designer

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Now I understand that some people are growing sick of the abundance of ‘lists’ thrown at them from every direction. Some of them are just a complete waste of space, others are quite entertaining and every once in awhile you actual find something informative and useful. I hope to create the later of three to use as a resource for both myself and for anyone looking to excel in the field of design. In my quest to become a better designer I am constantly scouring the internet for information, inspiration and tutorials that will help me to achieve my goal. This method applies not only to design but also in my search to become a successful marketer, as the concepts of marketing apply not only to my own business adventure but to the concepts of good graphic design. I constantly run into list concerning the topic of marketing but there seems to be a void when it comes to a compilation of the many great design sites out there. What I have started for you below is a brief list of inspirational and informative sites concerning the topic of design. I hope that you will both comment on them and add your own so that we can create and extensive list for the aspiring as well as professional designer. Lets be honest no matter what stage of the game you are at there is never enough room for good inspiration.

So here it goes (no particular order of favorites)

1. www.sitepoint.com - Not only is this a great place for informative articles, an entire community of talented people willing to share their knowledge but you can also find yourself in a wonderful position to create some freelance cash-flow through their SitePoint Contest Platform. ( On a side note business and organizations looking for some brilliant design work can post a new contest and receive a vast array of brilliant concepts and ideas.)

2. www.cssbeauty.com - That’s just what it is, a showcase of the best in CSS designed sites from all corners of the web. That and a collection of well written articles providing all the latest news in the area of good web design making this site not only an excellent source of inspiration but a library of good info.

3. www.pixelsurgeon.com - A collection of the weird, the wild and the amazing when it comes to all things art and design.

4. www.computerarts.co.uk - A brilliant site on all things graphic from 3D Modeling to the beauty of business card design.

5. www.logopond.com - A very inspiring site I just recently stumbled upon concerning logo creation and branding. The first thing I read when I landed here was a quote stating ” Logo and brand development is, in my eyes, the crack cocaine of graphic design.”

6. www.feedmecool$h!t.com - (my pathetic attempt at keeping it rated G) Any how this is a beautiful site with an abundance of cool stuff including products, street art, up coming designer interviews… ah there is just to much to describe you’ll have to check it out. It’s like a cornucopia of art, design and music.

7. www.layersmagazine.com - Sure you’ve seen this one, it’s all things Adobe.

8. www.gomediazine.com -”Exclusive Insights for Art, Design and Marketing” This site would appear to function largely as a promotional tool for their Design Firm and the sale of their ‘Vector Packs’. But they really have some amazing talent and the tutorials they offer are pretty simple to follow getting you on your to creating some stunning work.

9. www.digitalthread.com - This one has been around for awhile and has become a never ending resource of inspiration and information.

10. www.designiskinky.com

This list is no where near complete and I am sure that I have probably omitted some of the obvious. Honestly I could probably go on and on as I am sure I have an endless supply of links saved on my desktop and written down in odd places but I said ten and then it’s your turn. So I open it up to you to add any and every design related link you think would be useful to the aspiring designer. I look forward to your comments and suggestions.
